EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE HOTTEST TREND RIGHT NOW... LIP BLUSH!

You have probably noticed how lip blush is on the rise in demand and popularity. I have been inundated with enquiries and questions so I figured it would make sense to create a blog on the topic. I am all about supporting clients with making an empowered decision and that's my intention with this blog to give you all the info you need so you can decide for yourself.

WHAT IS LIP BLUSH? Lip blush is a cosmetic tattoo, where pigment is implanted into the upper dermal layer of the skin where it can remain for a number of years before a colour boost is recommended.

WHY IS LIP BLUSH SO POPULAR?

Lips are the way we express ourselves in this lifetime they are one of our most used senses we use to experience the world in our own unique way. We use them to communicate, to eat, to show love, to experience and indulge in pleasure in whatever way that looks like to you personally.

The reason why clients come to me are generally for the following:

  • To add more volume and definition.

  • To add colour where it has been lost due to the ageing process, filler, or hormones/lifestyle.

  • To even out the symmetry of the lips.

  • To camouflage scar tissue.

  • To make their lives prettier and easier.

  • To avoid having to keep applying makeup and the toxic ingredients that are swallowed through lipstick. (I won't get into the gory details of what goes into many of the lipsticks available on the market.)

DOES IT HURT? I'VE HAD NO PREVIOUS TATTOOS OR PROCEDURES.

If you follow the pre-care advice and you do not consume caffeine, or take anticoagulants such as ibuprofen or cod liver oil etc then pain will be minimal. It does depend on individual pain threshold but numbing is applied for your comfort. When I tattooed my own lips I barely felt a thing. Afterwards they felt tender for a few hours. But that is to be expected.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DO?

The investment includes two treatments 6-8 weeks apart. At the first appointment there will be some forms for you to fill out and I will carry out an in depth consultation. Next I will draw the shape of the lips with precision and once you are happy numbing lotion will be applied and we will discuss colours. Once a colour has been decided the procedure will begin. I allow about 2 - 2.5 hours for the whole process.

At the top up appointment I will assess the colour and shape and I allow 1.5 - 2 hours for this just so that there is no rush and I can take my time to get your lips just right.

I'M UNSURE WHAT COLOUR/SHADE I WOULD LIKE HOW IS THE COLOUR DECIDED ON THE DAY?

If you wear lipstick regularly I will ask you to bring along your go to colour so that I can try to match it up depending on what your natural undertones are. I do not use one colour from a bottle, all of my colours are custom blended and can be a mix of up to 3 - 4 colours to get the perfect shade. If you don't wear a lot of makeup then I'm not going to offer you a bright red or a fuchsia pink. I work with integrity and pride myself on the natural enhancements I create.

THE AFTER PICTURES LOOK TOO BRIGHT FOR ME I'M ON THE FENCE...

When a tattoo is fresh it is sitting on top of the skin and oxidising which makes it appear bolder. The after picture is NOT the healed result. During the healing process the colour will disappear for up to 6 weeks and when it pushes back through it will be a much softer version of the original colour.

WHEN YOU HAVE LIP BLUSH DONE CAN YOU WEAR REGULAR LIPSTICK OVER THE TOP? WOULD THIS CHANGE THE APPEARANCE OF OTHER COLOURS? This is a fab question! Yes, you can wear other lip colours over the top and it won't alter the colour because the pigment is sat under the skin and the makeup will be applied to and sit on top of the skin. The other thing to add is that lip blush also prevents your lipstick from bleeding so there's an additional benefit for you!

HOW DO YOU MANAGE TO CLEAN YOUR TEETH WITHOUT GETTING THEM WET/GETTING TOOTHPASTE ON THEM?

This is specified in the aftercare. You apply a thin layer of the balm supplied while you brush your teeth pulling a Wallace and Gromit kind of face (super sexy I know!) and then dab them gently with a clean tissue after. Just to add that I don't recommend toilet tissue, it's too flimsy and bitty and you might find bits get stuck to your lips. I'm trying to type and keep a straight face here!

MY FRIEND SAGE SAID SHE HAD HERS DONE AND SHE NEARLY DIED BECAUSE IT WAS SO PAINFUL....

Did Sage really nearly die though? Sage didn't come to Laurella so I dunno maybe she paid cheap and her artist pressed too hard and tattooed her gums. Keep in mind though that we all have one friend who likes to over exaggerate and put people off doing what they want to do.

WHAT IS THE HEALING PROCESS LIKE?

It's quicker with lips than it is with brows. The peeling process is usually over within 3-7 days. It's a bit like in the winter if you get chapped lips. The colour will then be carried to the deeper layers of skin and can take up to 6 weeks to push back through revealing a much lighter/softer shade than the original colour applied.

CAN I HAVE LIP BLUSH IF I HAVE FILLER?

Yes! In no way does having Lip filler interfere with the process of tattooing lips or the results. Note that lip filler and lip blush appointments MUST be at least 4 weeks apart from each other.
